Wine
Wine has a close bond with Siena and surroundings. One of the main sources of wealth for this area consists of vineyards from which worldwide known wine sorts such as Chianti, Vernaccia, Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello and further D.O.C. wines, Bianco Val d'Arbia, Moscatello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montepulciano are produced.
As the many castles present in the Chianti area show, this is a widespread history rich land expanding from Florence to Arezzo and subdividing into Chianti Classico, Montalbano, Colli Fiorentini, Colli Senesi, Colli Aretini, Colline Pisane and Pistoiesi.
In the province of Siena Chianti Classico is produced especially in the villages of Castellina, Gaiole, Radda, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Poggibonsi.
Brunello is produced south of the province of Siena , in the famous village of Montalcino. Brunello, a D.O.C. wine since 1980, has been over and over awarded; also recently, for vintage 2006, it has been awarded by the well-known review «Wine Spectator» as best wine in the world.
Vino Nobile, another fine wine of Siena , is produced in the vineyards close to Montepulciano. Mentioned by great writers, it has been produced for more than thousand years and it was the first one in Italy to receive the acknowledgement "denominazione di origine controllata e garantita" (D.O.C.G.).
Vernaccia was the first classical white wine in Italy to receive the denomination of controlled origin; it is produced in San Gimignano, historical town of very ancient origins, from a very particular vine growing in an area with dry climate. Characterized by its straw-yellow colour and lightly bitter flavour, Vernaccia can be tasted at a temperature of 6-8°.
The olive oil
Just like wine olive oil represents a high-quality product in the province of Siena . Local oil production, dating back to old times, still makes use of traditional ancient oil mills.
The areas belonging to the province of Siena , mostly representative for oil tradition, are the Chianti, the Crete and the Val di Chiana. The oil of Siena , produced in areas between 300 and 600 m a.s.l., has a low acidity, does not have toxic waste and is particularly recommended in low fat diets.
Tipycal Tuscan appetizer prepared with oil is the so-called "bruschetta", that is a toasted bread slice soaked with quite spicy "novo" oil (of the year).
Pecorino cheese
A typical cheese of Siena is pecorino, mainly produced in the Crete and in the Val d'Orcia (Pienza). Pecorino is a very tasty cheese because the pastures of Siena area are rich of aromatic herbs thus allowing to produce very good quality milk.
The truffle
Another typical product of Siena area is the "tartufo bianco" (white truffle) of the Crete , growing in oak woods and ditches with willows, poplars and turkey oaks. Above all autumn season and the very beginning winter months are ideal for truffles to be collected with trained dogs. In November there is in San Giovanni d'Asso the Mostra Mercato of white truffle, where this famous tuber is available both for tasting and sale.
